Usually college students would be embarrassed to carry their teddy bears with them to class.
However, this wasn’t unusual on Friday due to the Campus Activities Board’s free create-your-own stuffed animal booth in DUC.
CAB Secretary Imari Hazelwood said this activity was organized as something fun for students near Valentine’s Day.
First, students chose which type of animal they wanted to stuff. Options included cows, monkeys, bears, dogs and lions, to name a few.
Then, students filled their stuffed animals, clothed them in a WKU t-shirt and even filled out a birth certificate for their new furry friend.
All in all, about 400 students walked away with a personalized stuffed animal, CAB members said.
CAB President Rahwa Mehari said the activity was a way for students to relax and have fun.
Mehari said that CAB also organizes lectures, concerts and an ongoing film series for students.
CAB wants to make sure that students are entertained, Mehari said.
Popular animals, like the giraffe, ran out quickly.
Robin McPeak, a sophomore from Tompkinsville, Ky., got the last tan-colored teddy bear.
McPeak said making the bear was nostalgic, but she is not keeping it for herself.
She said the bear was for her nephew who will be born in a few months.
Owensboro sophomore Dylan Wilson planned to give his girlfriend a tiger.
The tiger is a little something extra for Valentine’s Day, Wilson said.
“But I should probably get her something else too,” he said.
CAB member Brittany Netherton, a Tompkinsville sophomore, said the event sounded really exciting while it was in the planning stage, so she decided to stop by and experience it firsthand.
“No matter how old you get, you can’t help but get excited about hands-on activities,” Netherton said.
