Athletics Director Wood Selig confirmed Monday that head basketball coach Darrin Horn will leave Western to accept the same position at the University of South Carolina. The Daily Gamecock, South Carolina's campus newspaper, reported that South Carolina Board of Trustees have been called to a meeting at 11 a.m. on Tuesday regarding athletic department personnel.
Fraternities from across the Hill gathered on Thursday night at Jaycees Pavilion on Old Morgantown Road to watch 27 boxers throw down for a good cause. Representatives of the different fraternities dawned their boxing gloves and stepped into the ring for three rounds lasting one minute a piece.
At an impromptu press conference yesterday, Gov. Steve Beshear announced the casino bill is dead. Beshear and House Democrats couldn't get enough votes for the bill to pass in the House of Representatives before the end of legislative session, when the General Assembly goes into a 10-day recess before resuming to look at any vetoed bills.
PHOENIX - For the first two games in the NCAA Tournament, it was Western's opponent that made runs and cut into what was often a double-digit lead in favor of the Toppers'. Thursday, it was Western's turn to play the comeback kid. But it was too little, too late, as Western lost 88-78 in the West regional semifinal of the NCAA Tournament Thursday night in Phoenix.
PHOENIX - If there were ever a tale of two halves, Western's 88-78 loss to UCLA in the West regional semifinal of the NCAA Tournament was it. After being outscored 41-20 and being held to just six field goals and 18 percent from the field in the first half Western did their best to rally back.
Key Matchup: Senior guard Tyrone Brazelton against UCLA guard Darren Collison. Brazelton has been playing some of his best, most unselfish basketball thus far in the NCAA Tournament. The key for Brazelton will be to stay out of foul trouble early. The more Brazelton is on the bench, the less likely the chances of Western knocking off the top-seeded Bruins.
