JUST SAYIN’: Without pop culture, our conversations would be boring

Our parents always told us to never sit too close to the television, or else we’d go blind. It’d mess up our eyes by the time we’re 16. Our eyesight would be worse than Mr. Magoo’s. But we didn’t care. We wanted to see “Looney Tunes” so badly that we had to make sure we could see and hear everything clearly.

When the Billboard was dominated by perennial chart-toppers like Usher, Norah Jones and Outkast, there was an emergence of unlikely groups to gain notoriety. Modest Mouse, a band whose career started in 1996 and whose style remained mostly unchanged since then, gained sudden popularity with the April release of “Good News for People Who Love Bad News.

JUST SAYIN’: How I spent my spring break doing absolutely nothing

I’m gonna pull a Seinfeld here and make this the column about nothing. Full of ramblings. Full of futility. Bubble. Pop. Electric. For example, spring break was definitely needed. For the previous nine or so weeks, I’ve been running around like a jack rabbit.

Accelerated success

Lead role on a national television show? Got it. Featured in People magazine’s 50 Sexiest Men issue? Old news. Play reading with Tom Hanks? Not a problem. Winchester native Matt Long’s to-do list is a bit shorter and quite different than the average 24-year-old since he began portraying the character of Jack McAllister on the WB series “Jack and Bobby.

We don’t need celebrities to show us how to protect the Earth

I will be bold and say I do not like Cameron Diaz. I know this is terribly upsetting, especially when the consensus amongst the 18 to 24-year-old male crowd is that she is a unbelievable dream come true. She’s blonde, bubbly, loves to shake her bottom for no apparent reason, has graced the cover of Maxim, and she is willing to belch on the “Tonight Show with Jay Leno” while wearing a low cut top.
