Literary achievement: Student writers honored at workshop

For nine years, the Jim Wayne Miller Celebration of Writing has honored the best fiction and poetry writers at Western. This year, the ten finalists will be honored on Sunday for their writing and be given the opportunity to hone their craft with distinguished fiction writer Sally Bingham.

It’s like American Idol for filmmakers, said Sean Thomas, founder of the Two-Day Film Challenge. With no Simon Cowell to hassle them, a group of regional filmmakers were given the challenge of making a five-minute film in two days for the chance to win $1,000 worth of prizes.

Kappa Derby adds volleyball

Before sophomore Ryan Dillon could even spell “law enforcement,” he was watching the fence-leaping heroes from “Cops” live out his dreams. Though Dillon’s dream is still the same, a lot has changed since he was the shy kid from Indiana. Dillon began his life in Indianapolis, which he said was a perfect place for a sports fan like him.
