At first glance, the Western Hills Motel on Morgantown Road looks likes it’s empty. Western students pass the place every day, heading toward Wal-Mart. Little do they know some people call this motel home.

This semester Herald photojournalists find interesting stories on the edges of campus. With her yard packed full of clothes, antiques and other knick-knacks, 45-year-old Susan Bryan had time to reflect on family. The yard sale was mostly comprised of items that belonged to family members she no longer lives with, such as her father and older brother.

Hundreds of media correspondents swarmed in Blacksburg, Va., on Monday after the deadliest school shooting in U.S. history at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University.

Students and Blacksburg residents were approached by news teams from around the world with questions of “How do you feel?” and “Did you know any of the victims?” Some students took the questions with ease, others turned away in disgust.
