Suicide is the second leading cause of death among college students. Untreated depression can lead to suicide, according to www.healthyminds.org. To help students combat depression, the Counseling and Testing Center is hosting a free depression screening tomorrow for National Depression Screening Day.

When Leitchfield freshman Renee Pinkston first stepped on the Hill, she weighed 254 pounds. The 5-foot-8-inch Pinkston said she has struggled with her weight for almost all of her life. Pinkston, like many Americans, is obese. Her body mass index is about 13.

Western students and faculty took time out of class Tuesday afternoon to fill the Mass Media and Technology Hall Auditorium to hear James Hill, a professor from the University of Colorado speak about the obesity epidemic in the United States.

Free rent sounds great, right? But like the old saying goes, “nothing in life is free.” Students who take positions as resident assistants in dorms and community assistants in student-based apartments can receive discounted or free housing. But along with that, the job also comes with its share of responsibility.

For some freshmen during the first week of school, walking up the Hill comes with ease. The second week may not be as easy. Toward the end of the semester the trek up the Hill might be equivelant to a 10-mile run. The Hill’s not getting steeper, but freshmen are getting fatter.
