Every baseball player just asks for a chance to be looked at, for the one scout to notice them and offer a ticket to the show. Former Western pitcher Matt Wilhite was as dependable as Fourth of July fireworks. From 2000-03, Wilhite saw 110 appearances, the most in team history, while working mostly out of the bullpen.

Though the last few years may not have indicated it, Western has a rich men’s basketball history. Since Western joined the Sun Belt Conference in 1982, the Toppers have won seven regular season conference championships and five tournament championships and made a Sweet-16 appearance in 1993.

Steak or hot dogs. This year’s annual Red/White scrimmage to conclude Western’s spring season had a twist on Saturday. The game’s winner would be eating steak for dinner, while the loser would be left to eat hot dogs. The teams needed an extra session to decide who would be eating what, as the Red team prevailed with a 16-10 win in overtime.

Though the weather may not indicate it, baseball season has begun. Teams all over the country, from the lowest levels of the minor leagues to the highest, have players trying to catch a ride with a major league team. Bowling Green may soon become a part of that pipeline.
