The worst thing that happened on campus Wednesday was a fight, as far as officials know, said Howard Bailey, vice president for student affairs, at a press conference. Five people have been taken into custody. After the press conference, Sarah Pehlke and Missy Seewer, both Louisville freshman, approached campus police chief Robert Deane and Maj.

Shots were fired outside of Pearce-Ford Tower early this morning, according to campus police. Campus police responded to a report of shots fired at about 3 a.m. Saturday morning, according to a Western press release. According to the press release, a witness reported that a male got out of a vehicle in the PFT parking lot, fired a gun, returned to the vehicle and left.

Classes on the main campus after 3:30 p.m. are canceled today because of icy weather. Classes on Western’s regional campuses were canceled earlier today. The National Weather Service released a statement at 1:19 p.m. saying travel should be avoided. Students are advised to make decisions about coming to classes in terms of their own safety, Provost Barbara Burch stated in an e-mail to faculty and staff this morning.

Hearing of a hurricane making landfall thousands of miles away doesn’t usually make much of an impact on people at Western, but for Terrence McCain, assistant professor of middle grades education, something like this is at the top of his list. Tuesday, Hurricane Felix made landfall on the Honduran-Nicaraguan border as a Category 5, with windspeeds reaching more than 160 mph, according to the New York Times.

A fire was reported this afternoon in Chandler Park Apartments, located off Cave Mill Road behind Greenwood Mall. The apartments are the home of some Western community members. The fire has been contained. A call to the Bowling Green Fire Department came in at about 4:20 p.m.

The official cause of death for a student found dead in Keen Hall on April 24 is asphyxiation, Warren County Coroner Harold Sanson said Thursday.
Jaron M. Kormelink, a freshman from Clarksville, Tenn., was found dead in his Keen dorm room on Tuesday.
Sanson said he is waiting on a toxicology report from the medical examiner’s office in Louisville before he files his report on Kormelink’s death
The results will be available in 30 to 60 days, he said.

Officials are still investigating the death of a student who was found dead in Keen Hall Tuesday.
The coroner’s office said more information might be available today.
Nineteen-year-old Jaron M. Kormelink, a freshman from Clarksville, Tenn., was taken Tuesday to the medical examiner’s office in Louisville for an autopsy to determine the official cause of death, said Bob Edwards, assistant vice president for university relations.

The student was 19-year-old Jaron M. Kormelink, a freshman from Clarksville, Tenn., according to a Western news release.

The deadliest shooting incident in the nation’s history shut down buildings and drew law enforcement officers Monday at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University.
On the Hill, the shooting had people dialing loved ones in the area and considering campus safety.

The Board of Regents approved today the purchase of three properties to be the site of a new building for Western’s College of Education and Behavioral Sciences.
Western is purchasing 1666, 1670 and 1680 Normal Drive for $707,500 plus closing costs. The money is from state bonds approved by the 2006 Kentucky General Assembly.
