Life is a funny thing. We always look forward to the big events. Some of us even count down the days to the end of the semester, graduation, weddings, you name it. But the truth is, like many have said before, life is what happens when you’re planning for it.

Heavy metal music leaks from the walls of Downing University Center Subway, occasionally amplified from the doors swinging open as students take a break from the show. Clusters of teens and 20-somethings stand outside talking and laughing. This is a typical fall night for them during the school year.

These past few weeks, I’ve been dragging myself to class (10 minutes late) and making little to no effort on my hair, makeup and, let’s face it, wardrobe. With a couple weeks to go, that smile and glimmer in my eye that I had as I sat in the front of all my classes has slowly turned into an uncontrollable, irreversible glaze.

The country band Lonestar, best known for the hit song “Amazed,” will perform at the Capitol Arts Center at 7:30 p.m., on Friday, Nov. 30. The group will play a collection of past hits and and new music from their latest album, “My Christmas List,” guitarist Michael Britt said.

There are many lessons we are taught in life. You know, like look both ways before you cross the street or eat all your vegetables. One that holds true for me, no matter how old I get, is trust your gut. It’s simplistic enough, but it’s something many of us don’t do when all rational thought might conflict with what our gut is pounding into our heads.

For Amy Ogden, a senior from Dyersburg, Tenn., Saturday is the last Homecoming she’ll spend dressed in uniform and surrounded by her fellow members of the Big Red Marching Band. It’ll be the last Homecoming she’ll wear her traditional black headband, something that’s not only exclusive to the baritone section of the band, but also something she considers a necessary part of her uniform.

Some people have it all figured out. From the day they’re born, they know the path they’re going to take in life. They know what career they want to have, the type of person the want to marry – everything. I’m not one of those people. I’ve tried. I’ve tried planning my life, following that path, or “staying the course,” as our friend “Dubya” would say.

Something’s been bugging me for a while. It’s caused me to lose sleep, have horrible days and develop an inconvenient twitch in the corner of my eye. It all started last week, after the torrential monsoon we experienced. I was minding my own business, dodging the mud puddles while walking to my car on Chestnut Street.

The pungent smell of malt fills the air in and around the building of the Bowling Green Brewing Company. Inside, Dale Burden, director of operations and Ryan Crosby, brewmaster, are making the local company’s new brew of beer – Pale Ale. The Bowling Green Brewing Company, located on Veterans Memorial Lane, has been in business since last April.

Lynwood Montell, former Western professor and writer of books about Kentucky ghosts, said he’s heard many ghost stories about the Bowling Green area. Montell said Western’s campus also has many legends about ghosts and spirits that are well-known throughout the community.
