Western found not liable

The Kentucky Supreme Court decided Thursday that Western and the Student Life Foundation are not responsible in a wrongful death lawsuit involving a freshman killed on campus in 2003.

The court’s 6-0 decision upheld a Court of Appeals’ decision that Western was immune and reversed an appeals’ decision that Western’s Student Life Foundation was not immune.

Three arrested after robbery

A Western student was robbed near Downing University Center at about 1:30 Wednesday morning.

Oak Grove freshman Isadora Rivera parked her car in the Creason lot and was walking to Minton Hall when three men and a juvenile followed her, said Maj. Mike Wallace, field operations commander for campus police.

Gubernatorial candidate to discuss ideas at DUC

A gubernatorial hopeful is stopping at the Hill tonight.

Republican candidate and Paducah businessman Billy Harper will speak at 6 p.m. at Downing University Center.

Harper will have a meet-and-greet in DUC, Rooms 310 B and C.

He’ll speak to Western’s College Republicans chapter at 8 p.m.

Regent seat up for grabs

Students have until the end of the day to cast votes for their representative on Western’s governing body.
There are four candidates for the student regent position on the Board of Regents. The election began yesterday and will end at 11:59 p.m. today.
Robert Watkins resigned as Student Government Association president and student regent last semester, leaving a vacant seat on the board.

Minimum wage may increase

Bardstown junior Amber Roberts can barely pay her cell phone bill. She can’t spend money at the mall. She can’t buy books until she gets her next paycheck. Roberts is working for $5.15 an hour as a circulation assistant at Cravens Graduate Center and Library.

Fletcher discusses surplus

Gov. Ernie Fletcher said Western might get the projects back that he vetoed last year. Fletcher called a “town hall” meeting at the Carroll Knicely Conference Center Wednesday to discuss what to do with Kentucky’s projected $279 million budget surplus. President Gary Ransdell and other leaders want the surplus to help fund the projects Fletcher vetoed last session.

Autry case appeal set for Jan. 18

A date has been set for the Kentucky Supreme Court to hear appeals and decide if Western and the Student Life Foundation can be included in a wrongful death suit for the murder of Pellville freshman Melissa “Katie” Autry.

The Supreme Court will hear the appeals at 11 a.m.

Western projects up for discussion in legislature

A number of Western projects that Gov. Ernie Fletcher vetoed last year will be discussed again during the legislative session starting in January, said House Speaker Jody Richards, D-Bowling Green.

A bill with all of the Western projects will be filed so the legislature can make a priority of confirming them, he said.
