One year ago, Junkyard Gypsies was just an idea of co-owners Kellie Steen and Kim Simpson, both of Bowling Green. Steen was in the process of setting up a booth when Simpson’s husband offered two houses on Kenton Street to rent.
The walls in these houses are now covered from floor to ceiling with items from consigners, including everything from signs to shoes to porcelain statues. One house stores all of the smaller items, and the other houses the “big junk,” according to Steen.
“A little junk and a lot of funk” is the store’s motto, Steen said. She believes the eclectic amount of “junk” that Junkyard Gypsies has collected sets them apart from the other consignment shops in Bowling Green.
“A Thousand Words” is a weekly photo essay that tells untold stories on the edges of campus.
