Western Weezer fans are logging onto Facebook in an attempt to bring the band to the Hill.
Weezer is the face of the new Motorola CLIQ phone from T-Mobile. T-Mobile is hosting a competition between universities called the Motorola CLIQ Challenge, according to its Facebook application.
Weezer released its newest CD in early November, according to Weezer’s Web site.
Facebook users can go to the Facebook application and vote for a university to win a concert from Weezer and up to $25,000 dollars for the university, according to the application.
The winning school gets money based on how many people voted for the school in the competition. The winning school can get up to $25,000 for 25,000 or more people voting in the competition, according to the application.
As of Sunday, Western was ranked 56th with 874 votes, according to the application.
Elizabethtown senior Kendrick Bryan, Student Government Association executive vice president, said he’s advertising the competition to Western students through Facebook and the current students page on Western’s Web site.
“I’d like to see us higher,” he said. “I think we had four votes when we started.”
Western is ahead of all other Kentucky universities in the competition, Bryan said. Western was once last but passed up the other schools quickly.
Bryan is also a part of the Facebook group, “Bring Weezer to the Hill!” More than 1,000 students have joined the group.
There are more people in the Western Facebook group than have actually voted in the competition, he said.
The contest began on Nov. 1 and will end at 11:59 p.m. on Nov. 30, Bryan said.
Scottsville sophomore Zack Rockrohr, a Weezer fan, said the chance to bring such a well-known band to a small town like Bowling Green is a rare opportunity.
“WKU has a reputation of being a not-so-well-known school that accomplishes amazing feats,” he said in an e-mail. “… our school has great potential to accomplish great tasks, if we put our minds and efforts to it. Plus, Weezer kicks ass, who wouldn’t want to go see them?”
Weezer has brought cool and slightly nerdy kids amazing hits since 1992 and still does, he said.
SGA President Kevin Smiley said Western can easily compete with other universities in the competition.
“It’s kind of a fun Facebook-y thing to do,” he said. “We can contend with it.”
