Momentum should be on the Lady Topper’s side as they head into the Sun Belt Conference Tournament this week.
Western concluded the regular season with sweeps over Troy (25-14, 25-18, 25-20) on Friday and South Alabama (25-13, 25-18, 25-16) on Saturday. With the victories, the Lady Toppers secured the No. 3 seed in the conference tournament, to be held in Diddle Arena Nov. 19-21.
“I am definitely proud of where we are,” Head Coach Travis Hudson said. “We have to feel good about ourselves going into the tournament.”
In Saturday’s match, the Lady Toppers (24-8, 13-4 Sun Belt) finished with a .342 hitting percentage and were led by sophomore setter Lauren Stuckel, who had six kills, 30 assists and a .500 hitting percentage.
“Stuckel played as well as she has all year this weekend,” Hudson said.
Things were much the same in Friday’s victory over Troy. Western’s defense held the Trojans to a .059 hitting percentage. Three Lady Toppers had at least eight kills, while freshman libero Sarah Rogers led the team with 20 digs.
“We took a good step forward this weekend,” senior outside hitter Abbie Siljendahl said. “That should help us out a lot for next week.”
Having secured the No. 3 seed, Western will play the No. 6 seed, which will be determined Saturday evening. Western will play its first-round match Thursday in Diddle Arena.
