After scoring 16 goals in the last four games, the Lady Toppers were held scoreless in a 2-0 loss to Denver Friday night at the WKU Soccer Complex.
The Lady Toppers (12-4-1, 7-2) managed nine shots, but were unable to create many chances to score.
Coach Jason Neidell said that was a testament to Denver’s defense.
“We were playing a good team,” he said. “You shouldn’t expect to create as many chances against Denver as you do against Arkansas State. You just have to capitalize on the chances you get. They capitalized on the ones that they created off of our mistakes, but we didn’t capitalize on the one’s we had.”
Sophomore forward Mallory Outerbridge had a chance to score midway through the first half when she had a one-on-one with Denver goalkeeper Lara Campbell but lost control of the ball before getting a shot off.
Denver scored two minutes later when forward Mariah Johnston scored from 25 yards out.
Neidell said his team didn’t play well in the first fifteen minutes of the second half, which led to Denver’s second goal.
The ball was kicked around several times and sophomore midfielder Kelsey Meyer kicked the ball out of the net, saving a goal, before Denver midfielder Kelsey Quinn found the net off of the rebound.
The Lady Toppers had two late corner kicks but were unsuccessful on both.
Senior defender Rachel Friedman said the team made a few simple mistakes that they will be able to fix before next game.
“I give all the credit to their team,” she said. “They played well and played better than we did tonight. We just didn’t create as many chances as we’ve been creating. We didn’t play bad, but we had our moments where we weren’t good enough.”
The Lady Toppers will play North Texas at 1 pm. on Sunday, which will be the team’s Senior Day.
