Vote on garage move

The Bowling Green mayor and city commissioners will vote tonight on whether to move a parking garage within the Tax Increment Financing district closer to Western’s campus.

This will be final vote on the move. They earlier voted 3-2 in favor of the move.

  • Commissioner Joe Denning voted against moving the garage during the first vote at a meeting on Sept. 15. He said he is against moving the garage because he doesn’t think the city should use taxpayers’ money to help Western construction. “Western has, I am sure, funds to build any project that they want on the campus, and they should do so,” Denning said.
  • Commissioner Catherine Hamilton voted for moving the garage during the September meeting. She couldn’t be reached for comment before press time.
  • Commissioner Brian “Slim” Nash voted for moving the garage during the first vote. He couldn’t be reached for comment before press time.
  • Mayor Elaine Walker originally voted against moving the garage. “I will definitely stick with my vote because there’s no benefit to the city or the TIF district with this move,” she said.
  • Commissioner Bruce Wilkerson voted for moving the garage during the last meeting. He said he’ll decide how he’ll vote this time after he hears what the public has to say tonight, but he’s leaning toward voting the same way. “You make your final call at the time that the final call needs to be made,” Wilkerson said.

The meeting starts at 7 p.m. tonight at City Hall, 1001 College Street.
