Florence freshman Laura Chaney is remembered by Charlotte Elder as a “bright spot,” and vivacious woman.
Chaney, a member of Sigma Kappa sorority, was pronounced dead at 8:28 a.m. today at the Bowling Green Medical Center, said Harold Sanson, Warren County deputy coroner.
The cause of death is pending an autopsy, which will take about six weeks, Sanson said.
Foul play isn’t suspected, said Howard Bailey, vice president of student affairs.
A candlelight vigil has been planned for Chaney by Housing and Residence Life, said Gary Wiser, the coordinator for Greek Affairs.
The vigil will begin at 7:30 p.m. today in the Valley.
Sigma Kappa will also host an open memorial at 10 a.m. Wednesday in Downing University Center room 340, Wiser said.
Elder, the chapter adviser for Sigma Kappa and a communication instructor, had Chaney in class this semester.
“She was just one of those really special people,” she said.
Elder recalled one of the big dreams she said Chaney had.
“She used to talk about being the vice president,” Elder said.
Elder remembered Chaney as a fun, considerate woman who had a “good head on her shoulders.”
“There’s not a person who ever met her who didn’t remember her in a wonderful, positive way,” she said.
