Students gathered in the Valley Monday evening to share memories about their friend Laura.
Florence freshman Laura Chaney, a member of Sigma Kappa sorority, was pronounced dead Monday morning at the Bowling Green Medical Center.
The cause of death is pending an autopsy, which will take about six weeks.
Her friends and sorority sisters held candles as they formed a circle in the Valley, comforting each other and laughing about times they had spent with Chaney.
Several members of Sigma Kappa spoke, saying Chaney always made everyone happy and was fun to be around.
“God always picks his prettiest flowers first,” one of her sorority sisters said during the vigil.
Some members of Sigma Kappa deferred comments to their chapter adviser, Charlotte Elder.
Elder said during the vigil that she could tell Chaney was special “as soon as she stepped into the Sigma Kappa world.”
Elder, who was also Chaney’s communication instructor, said she and the rest of her class would miss Chaney.
Sigma Kappa will host an open memorial for Chaney at 10 a.m. Wednesday in Downing University Center Room 340.
