Since being elected, the new officers of the Student Government Association have been asked how current and future students can get involved. To create the most diverse branches, we have encouraged getting new faces involved to start new initiatives and events.
Currently, the SGA claims a few staples such as organizational aid, the annual Hall of Distinguished Seniors presentation, campus safety walks, campus clean-up events, sponsoring extended library hours, field trip, textbook, and study abroad scholarships, as well as the Provide-A-Ride program.
However, we want to think of new ways to better student life on the Hill. Administrative Vice President Justin Thurman and I campaigned on using more student funds on the students through our scholar development initiative in which more money will be allotted to scholarships for study abroad as well as for research conferences. We also hope to provide complementary test materials in convenient locations for campus residents and commuters.
There is much more to the SGA than the budget. There are committees and positions that will require the attention of dedicated and determined students; we will need assistance with our Academic Affairs, Student Affairs, Public Relations, Sustainability, Legislative Research, Campus Improvements and Diversity Issues committees. The SGA is also looking for new faces to represent the study body on University committees as well as in the Student Senate. Please contact SGA President Kevin Smiley with questions and concerns.
Applications are currently available in the SGA office for the positions of director of Public Relations, director of Information Technology and director of Academic and Student Affairs. These positions are for the 2009-2010 academic year and require weekly office hours.
If interested, please visit the SGA office in Room 130 of the Downing University Center, call (270) 745-4354 or visit the SGA Web site at www.wku.edu/sga.
