Regents approve amendment, eliminate proposed fee

The Board of Regents voted Friday to raise tuition.

But the board eliminated a proposed extra charge for students taking more than 15 hours.

Tuition will increase by 4 percent next semester, taking resident undergraduate tuition from $3,465 to $3,600 if approved by the Council on Postsecondary Education on May 22, according to the meeting agenda.

Regents voted to eliminate an item in the meeting’s agenda which called for students to pay a $30 fee in addition to tuition for each credit hour they took exceeding 15 hours.

The decision came after the Student Government Association and administrators discussed the fee earlier this week.

Regents voted to increase the add/drop fee from $20 to $50 instead.

“I think that was a pretty good compromise on both sides,” President Gary Ransdell said.

Regents also approved new majors and minors, including a middle grades mathematics major and a major in science and math education. Minors approved include sustainability, creative writing and professional writing.
