Western’s community of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Questioning and Intersex students might have a resource center again after a Student Government Association resolution passed Monday night.
Western had such a center, called The Outlet, from 2002 to 2007, said Chief of Staff Skylar Jordan, co-author of the resolution.
The Outlet was housed in McCormack Hall and was the first center of its kind in Kentucky, Jordan said.
Housing and Residence Life closed the center in 2007 because they needed the space for a living-learning community, Jordan said.
SGA passed a resolution that supported keeping the center open, but it closed anyway, Jordan said.
Jordan said that recently a senator who lives in McCormack told him the area is now used for storage, which is symbolic, he said.
“They turned the Outlet into a closet,” he said.
The resolution SGA passed supports reestablishing a resource center for LGBTQI students.
The vote was unanimous.
Louisville sophomore Kat Michael, co-author of the resolution, addressed the senate before they voted on the resolution.
She said not having a center for LGBTQI students on campus is a loss.
Those students need a place to get away from the challenges they face everyday and meet others like themselves, Michael said.
The senate also approved the appointment of Lexington freshman VaShae Swope to a new diversity issues ad-hoc committee.
SGA President Johnathon Boles said he created the committee after a forum that SGA sponsored a few weeks ago which dealt with campus safety issues.
Racial tensions became a topic at the forum, and Swope said she was interested in being involved in such a committee.
Swope said she doesn’t want the committee to be limited to racial issues, but open to all issues related to diversity.
The committee plans to start regular meetings on Mondays beginning next week, Swope said.
The senate voted to have this week’s meeting on Monday instead of Tuesday because Thanksgiving break starts Wednesday, and more senators would be able to attend.
