The worst thing that happened on campus Wednesday was a fight, as far as officials know, said Howard Bailey, vice president for student affairs, at a press conference.
Five people have been taken into custody.
After the press conference, Sarah Pehlke and Missy Seewer, both Louisville freshman, approached campus police chief Robert Deane and Maj. Mike Wallace, field operations commander, and said that shots were fired.
The students said they were in Bemis-Lawrence Hall when they saw a fight taking place outside.
They said they saw a male lift a gun and heard two shots fired. They said they could identify three males who were involved in the fight.
Deane and Wallace declined to comment immediately.
Bailey said there was no evidence of shots fired or weapons on campus or South Campus.
Officials think the incident was a continuation of an altercation at a social event on Saturday night hosted by Black Men of Western, Bailey said. No organization members were involved.
Bailey said at this point, he doesn’t think Western did anything wrong by reporting that shots were fired because that was the information available at the time.
“This institution is committed to the safety of all of our citizens. We are always going to do what is in the best interest of those citizens,” he said.
There were reports of four people with weapons at South Campus earlier in the day.
No one has been shot or arrested, said Bob Skipper, director of media relations.
One person was injured in a fight. He was taken in an ambulance, he said.
The person was injured while trying to break up the fight, said Taylor, vice president for public affairs.

South Campus has been released.
Classes have been canceled for the rest of the day on main campus and at Bowling Green Community College.

There were four subjects with weapons, the officer said.
Officials sent a text message saying that armed men had been reported on South Campus at 12:30 p.m.
The text asked students to stay clear of the area.
An emergency management system announcement told students that there was immediate danger and to seek shelter at 12:44 p.m.
Western officials sent an email at 12:47 p.m. saying that there had been an incident on South Campus involving guns.
Officials sent an e-mail at 12:52 p.m. saying that that was a report of shots being fired at or around PFT.
Police confirmed that there was a physical fight not involving weapons, according to a Western press release. Police are investigating to determine whether weapons were present
South Campus was evacuated and police began conducting a room-by-room search, the officer said.
Campus police are leading the investigation and will later release information.
