A thousand words

Mike Versluys is all about his kids.

“My wife helps them with their schooling,” Versluys said. “I help them with everything else.”

Trying to provide for a family, though, is challenging. Versluys knows it first hand.

Versluys, 44, originally from Quad Cities, Ill., moved to Bowling Green with his family seven years ago looking for work at a John Deere plant. The plant never opened.

“There was nothing up there,” he said. “So I came here to find nothing.”

Versluys isn’t college-educated, and an injury prevents him from gaining employment. Right now, disability checks are paying the bills.

In the meantime, Versluys’ focus is on his children, including his 11-year-old daughter Anna. He says he wants to give them a chance at a life he never had.
