On Funding Higher Education

Sen. David Boswell, D-Owensboro

He plans to work to get federal money to fund higher education. “We need to get back to adequately funding higher education,” he said. “It has driven the cost of tuition at all of our public institutions up.”

Sen. Brett Guthrie, R-Bowling Green

He strongly supports increasing funding for Kentucky’s higher education institutions, said Brain Smith, Guthrie’s campaign manager, in an e-mail. The Guthrie family has been financially supportive of Western over the years.

On Alternative Energy

Boswell

He said he will work to find and fund alternative fuels, such as coal-to-liquid and soy diesel. “We can’t drill ourselves out of this problem,” he said.

Guthrie

He thinks the U.S. needs to invest in alternative energy sources and technology, Smith said. He proposes adding off-shore rigs, extracting oil from shale, drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge and expanding the U.S.’s refining capacity.

On Gas prices

Boswell

He said the key to lowering prices is a combination of several approaches, including finding alternative fuels, developing U.S. fuel resources and promoting the production of fuel efficient vehicles.

Guthrie

He thinks increasing American oil drilling, investing in alternative energy technology and conserving fuel will lower gas prices, Smith said.

On Bringing Jobs to Kentucky

Boswell

He said finding alternative energy sources will bring more jobs to Kentucky. He helped write a bill to bring 2,000 jobs to Kentucky during his time in the general assembly.

Guthrie

He has experience creating jobs since his company, which is 100 percent American, started with 10 employees and now has 500, Smith said. He knows how government affects Main Street businesses because he runs one.
