U.S. residents who would like to request an absentee ballot must be registered voters.
Voters qualified to vote by absentee ballot are those who will be absent from their city or town on election day, those with a physical disability that prevents them from voting at the polling place and those who can’t vote at the polls because of religious beliefs.
Voters can apply for an absentee ballot by writing to their city or town clerk or election commission for a ballot. Information should include: name, address as registered, ward and precinct if known, address where the ballot should be sent and signature.
Applications are also available at local election offices. They can also be downloaded from the county clerk’s Web site.
Ballots don’t need to be witnessed. If voters can’t mark their own ballot then they may ask for help. The helper must print his or her name and the voter’s name on the envelope and write the reason that the voter needed help and then sign his or her name as the assisting person.
