Students now have representation on a task force that will review general education requirements.
Previously, there were no students on the task force.
Student Government Association President Johnathon Boles spoke with Provost Barbara Burch after he found out a student would not be on the task force.
“Students should be a part of everything on campus, including this,” Boles said.
Burch decided to add a spot on the task force for a student representative, he said.
Forums are also planned so that students and others can express their opinions on the issue, the Herald previously reported.
Boles announced his appointment of Louisville junior Brittany-Ann Wick, a student senator, as the student representative on the task force at the SGA meeting on Tuesday.
The senate must approve the appointment at next Tuesday’s meeting for it to be official, Boles said.
Wick said she wants to make general education a better learning experience for students.
She said she will represent students well on the task force because she talks regularly to students and wants to offer an objective viewpoint.
“Students are going to be the ones affected and have the best ideas,” Wick said.
The task force will look at the general education requirements for the first time in 10 years, and officials plan on changing those requirements based on their findings, the Herald previously reported.
The task force includes faculty members from most of the colleges on campus, the Herald previously reported.
Larry Snyder, associate dean of Potter College of Arts and Letters and head of the task force, previously told the Herald that there wasn’t a student on the task force because not every part of campus is represented anyway.
The task force hopes to come up with a proposal by next fall, the Herald previously reported. If the Board of Regents approves the changes, they will be implemented by fall 2010.
