A thousand words

Growing up, you wouldn’t find Terry “Tutor” Shipley at the park on a swing or with a toy in his hand. He could be found with his dad at the Shipley Chevron Station, standing there with a grease-covered wrench and a rag in each hand.

Tutor, now 50, has worked at the station “I started down here when I was a kid,” he said. “I remember when I would roll around on the ground and get covered with grease and oil and everything else. I thought I was working.”

Shipley Chevron is one of two full-service gas stations in Bowling Green. You can get your windshield cleaned, tires and oil checked, floorboards brushed out and your car filled with gas by paying the full service price.

“We’re not like normal gas stations,” Shipley said.

Not only can you get gas, but you can also get your car worked on. Changing oil, rotating tires and replacing brakes are just a few of the things that are done at Shipley Chevron.

“It’s about the people,” Shipley said. “You got to stop and talk to the people too. Sometimes it’s hard to get anything done.”
