SOFTBALL: Lady Tops take two at Belmont

The Lady Toppers provided tunes in Music City on Wednesday afternoon.

Except instead of steel guitars, the sound came courtesy of softballs hitting aluminum bats.

In their doubleheader wins against Belmont, the Lady Toppers (20-26, 4-13 Sun Belt Conference) won 12-2 in the first game and 10-3 in the second contest. The Lady Toppers have won six of their last seven games.

“Playing well has given us confidence,” coach Tyra Perry said. “We’ve played well in a couple games now, so we just need to continue to focus on that and keep the momentum.”

Junior pitcher Jennifer Kempf picked up the win in the second game, giving up only one run on eight hits.

Senior first baseman Shelby Smith led the offensive onslaught, tallying three RBIs, while junior third baseman Rebecca Horesky knocked in two.

In the first game, junior pitcher Ryan Rogge earned the victory, allowing two runs on five hits.

Smith brought home three RBIs in the first game. Freshman catcher Sara Williams, sophomore right fielder Lindsay Antone and Horesky had two RBIs each.

“We all played really well today,” Kempf said. “The hitting was really good today and we needed that so we were all really happy.”

Western will face South Alabama and Middle Tennessee State to wrap up its conference schedule.

Western play a doubleheader against Lipscomb between the two series.

Center fielder Sam Cronk said that she had only been worried about playing the game and wasn’t thinking about winning six out of their last seven.

“That’s news to me,” she said. “We were just upset that we had a chance to run-rule them both games and couldn’t.”

Western will try to keep its momentum going into the final stretch.

“We have the momentum and a world of confidence now,” sophomore shortstop Kelsey McCauley said. “We’re going into our final games feeling like we are going to beat the other team.”

The Lady Toppers complete their home schedule this weekend with a three-game conference series against South Alabama, starting with a doubleheader at 1 p.m. Saturday.
