Severe weather causes cancellations, problems on campus

Classes on the main campus after 3:30 p.m. are canceled today because of icy weather. Classes on Western’s regional campuses were canceled earlier today.

The National Weather Service released a statement at 1:19 p.m. saying travel should be avoided.

Students are advised to make decisions about coming to classes in terms of their own safety, Provost Barbara Burch stated in an e-mail to faculty and staff this morning.

Walking to class today was “very dangerous” for students, said Stuart Foster, state climatologist and director of the Kentucky Climate Center.

Foster said tomorrow’s forecast is for higher temperatures with a 90 percent chance of rain. This means there shouldn’t be any more freezing rain, making conditions less severe.

Classes haven’t been canceled for tomorrow.

Sleet and freezing rain will continue throughout central and south central Kentucky through mid afternoon, the weather service reported.

The men’s basketball game against South Alabama at 7 p.m. tonight hasn’t been canceled.

Some other events, such as “Far Away Places,” have also been canceled.

Conditions on roadways are improving in southern Bowling Green as temperatures are rising, WBKO reported.

Campus police advise drivers to allow more time to break and to drive slower.

Campus police responded to an accident at 9:51 a.m. in the Grise service drive, after the Herald delivery vehicle slid into a parked car. No one was hurt.

Two people reported minor injuries from falls on the ice to campus police officers, said Capt. Mike Dowell, communications officer for campus police. One fell at south campus, the other at the Chestnut Street lot.

Both declined to file reports, Dowell said.

Several students and faculty members held tightly to rails, moved with caution and opted to walk in the grass to avoid slips on icy sidewalks.

Several fell, but no serious injuries were reported to Health Services.

Franklin freshman Brittany Atkins fell in front of Thompson Complex.

She said skidded and fell on the ice on her way out of her morning classes.

She threw her backpack toward the door Bemis Lawrence Hall and crawled so she wouldn’t fall again.
