Talk of the ‘Tube

A simple search of “Kige Ramsey” on www.YouTube.com returns results that are full of prognostication, recaps, updates, shout-outs – and even advice for Nicole Richie.

Ramsey, a third-year student from Russellville, has made a name for himself on sports blogs and sports talk radio shows across the country, thanks to his dry, to-the-point opinions on mostly sports-related topics, which he broadcasts on YouTube.

Ramsey’s YouTube broadcasts are fairly simple, usually only about a minute long.

When he is in the studio, the set consists of a card table, a pen, a blank composition notebook and a University of Kentucky banner in the background. He keeps his hands in front of him, his eyes looking at the camera, and nearly every broadcast ends with the tagline, “Kige Ramsey, YouTube Sports.”

Ramsey said he figured if Larry King could have a fake microphone, then he could have a blank notebook.

“I’ve always wanted to be a broadcaster,” Ramsey said. “One of the viewers suggested that I start doing the videos full-time, and I started that in May.”

Ramsey got his initial start after Week 11 of the National Football League schedule last year. He recapped what happened in the week.

Ramsey’s wardrobe consists of a Kentucky football jersey, seven Tennessee Titans jerseys and, most recently, a Cincinnati Reds jersey.

Not only is Ramsey simple, he’s resourceful too.

“(The camera stand) is three trading card boxes with a couple books stacked on top,” Ramsey said.

However, Ramsey does not take the belongings on the road. If he is on location, Ramsey said, he either holds the camera he received as a graduation gift or puts it on a store shelf if he’s at Wal-Mart.

Ramsey posted a broadcast on June 30 that takes place in the heart of Wal-Mart’s automotive section. The backdrop is complete with motor-oil and tires.

“I’m usually at Wal-Mart, and it’s a pretty good place to film,” Ramsey said. “So I just started to film there.”

Russellville senior John Brett Reynolds has known Ramsey since high school. He said Ramsey is a relaxed, laid-back guy who can cover a lot of topics in a short amount of time.

“(The topics) can range from NCAA to NFL over to baseball and basketball before a five-minute conversation ends,” Reynolds said.

In August, Ramsey was a nominee for the www.Deadspin.com Hall of Fame. Deadspin is a popular sports blog that claims to deliver sports “without access, favor or discretion.” Ramsey cites Deadspin as helping him to get where he is now.

According to the Hall of Fame nomination page for Ramsey, Deadspin put him up for the award thanks to “the straightforward nature of his commentary, and absence of showmanship and tomfoolery.”

“Even though I came up short, it was still an honor to be nominated,” Ramsey said. “… Deadspin means a lot to me. They have a really good Web site.”

Ramsey needed 75 percent of the vote to be inducted. He received 74.1 percent.

Much of what Ramsey does is make predictions, which are often accurate. Prior to the Western and Middle Tennessee State game on Sept. 20, Ramsey said the Toppers would win by three points.

Final score: Western 20, Middle Tennessee 17.

Ramsey does not have any playing experience when it comes to sports. He describes himself as a sports fan who likes to comment and a man of the people.

Aside from predictions and recaps, Ramsey has also offered advice for those who are distressed in Hollywood.

He encouraged Nicole Richie to get help in a video that got more than 24,000 hits on YouTube.

Jason LeMar, co-host of “Jock Talk” on ESPN Radio 1380 AM in South Beloit, Ill., found Ramsey on YouTube and has had him on the show twice.

“He doesn’t expound on anything, he just gets right to the point,” LeMar said.

Ramsey has also made appearances on Sportstalk Radio 1300 AM’s “The Zone” in Austin, Texas.

“I’m glad the radio stations have been giving me time to do that,” Ramsey said. “It’s truly an honor.”

On the flip side, Ramsey said he receives criticism with each take he does.

“I just don’t pay attention,” Ramsey said. “I know people aren’t always going to agree with my takes.”

In the end, Ramsey hopes to someday have his own syndicated sports talk radio show. He said Jim Rome and Bob Costas have influenced him.

To reach his goal, Ramsey has a few simple tools.

“Hard work, hard work, hard work,” he said.
