WOMEN’S SOCCER: Lady Tops off to their best start in three years

Two players scored goals for the women’s soccer team over the weekend, but it was the players who assisted them that got the glory.

The Lady Toppers had three players make the Middle Tennessee Classic All-Tournament Team.

Senior midfielder Alicia Dalby and sophomore midfielder Megan Meinke both assisted in the first game against Mississippi State, playing the Lady Toppers to a 2-1 win.

“The defensive organization was something we harped on all preseason and the first couple weeks of the regular season,” assistant coach Chris Tinius said. “Morgan (Thomas) and Lindsey Passaglia stepped up and had really good weekends for us.”

Sophomore defender Thomas won Defensive Most Valuable Player of the tournament for her play in both games.

The women’s soccer team came home from the Classic with a 2-1 record, their best start in three years.

Last Sunday against Tulsa, the Lady Toppers outshot the Golden Hurricane 16-9, but it was Tulsa’s Jennifer Kacergis’ goal in the 12th minute of the first half that proved to be the winner.

Freshman forward Mallory Outerbridge led the team in shots with four, three of which were on goal.

Senior goalkeeper Meredith Goodson made six saves for the Lady Toppers.

Last Friday against Mississippi State it was all about the number two, with the team getting its second win and two players scoring their second goals of the season.

The first goal came quickly for the Lady Toppers, with junior Kristin Cocchiarella scoring in the sixth minute off an assist from Alicia Dalby, her second assist of the season.

Outerbridge also recorded her second goal of the season early in the second half with an assist from Megan Meinke, also her second assist of the year.

“The goal felt great,” said Outerbridge. “But I’m still young, have a lot to learn, and am inexperienced in the college game. I’m looking forward to learning a lot more the rest of the season.”

About five minutes later, Bethany Frazier scored the Bulldogs’ only goal in their first loss of the season.

Goodson was in goal the entire game for the first time this season, making 11 saves.

The game marked the first time the Lady Toppers had defeated a Southeastern Conference opponent in the team’s seven-year history.

Cocchiarella said that while the team had one good half in each of the games, the Lady Toppers need to work on staying consistant throughout.

“We have to work a lot harder throughout the entire game,” Cocchiarella said. “If we work for the entire 90 minutes the results will come. A loss this early isn’t the end of the world.”

The Lady Tops’ next game is a home match against Wofford College at 2 p.m. Friday at the WKU Soccer Complex.
