Tops make a statement

The Western football team walked onto Jimmy Feix Field Saturday afternoon with the intention of making a statement.

And after its multi-record breaking 87-0 victory over West Virgina Tech, it did.

The Toppers (1-1) scored 49 points in the first quarter which tied the NCAA Division I-A (Football Bowl Subdivision) record. Three other programs have accomplished this feat, the last being Fresno State in 1991.

Western set school records for points in a game and margin of victory as well.

Of the seven touchdowns scored in the first quarter, only three were by the offense. The other four were divided equally between the defense and special teams.

“It obviously looks like we’ve run up the score and that certainly was not our intention,” head coach David Elson said. “Things went so well for us early, with the different ways we scored and scoring so quickly, it just got to that point. So no disrespect to West Virgina Tech.”

The Toppers recorded 431 yards of total offense compared to the Golden Bears’ 15.

Elson said he was proud of how his players came out and competed at the level that they did.

“I thought they were focused and really excited about playing in front of our home crowd, which I thought was awesome,” Elson said. “I thought it was probably the best home-opener crowd that I’ve seen in the 11 years that I’ve been here.”

The game’s attendance reached 16,165 people.

“That was great to see,” Elson said.

Western faces Eastern Kentucky at 2 p.m. next Saturday at home in the “Battle of the Bluegrass.”
