Hundreds of media correspondents swarmed in Blacksburg, Va., on Monday after the deadliest school shooting in U.S. history at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University.

Students and Blacksburg residents were approached by news teams from around the world with questions of “How do you feel?” and “Did you know any of the victims?” Some students took the questions with ease, others turned away in disgust.

Students organized a candlelight vigil at the Drillfield Tuesday night.

“Go away, you vultures!” was heard from students and parents when a cameraman wouldn’t leave after being asked several times. Camera lights popped, and the questions started when the vigil ended. No matter how emotional people were, many reporters persisted. Students suspect that the media will stay through the semester or even the year.

“This is a lot more coverage than I suspected,” said Michael Dubas, a freshman from Newport News, Va. Some people said the more that the reporters persisted in their interviews with the people of Blacksburg, the less they wanted to talk about the murders.
