FOOTBALL NOTEBOOK: Moore makes final mark on Toppers

Senior running back Lerron Moore, Western’s all-time leading rusher, wrapped up his collegiate career Saturday.

Moore finished with 70 yards on 19 carries Saturday, leaving him with 4,404 career yards.

Current assistant coach and former Western quarterback Willie Taggart is second with 3,997 yards.

As a team, however, Western narrowly held the advantage in yards of total offense.

The Toppers outgained the Governors 330-327.

“It was ugly, but a W is a W and that’s the right way we wanna go out,” Moore said. “It really hasn’t hit me. It’ll probably hit me tonight when I’m laying in bed. I might shed a couple of tears. It just feels good to be a part of this program. This program will always be a part of my heart.”

Fourth-down wonder

Junior safety Clay Stephens has been seldom used on defense in his career at Western but has made a name for himself with his play on special teams this season.

Stephens, the upback for the punt team, had his number called on fourth and four at the Austin Peay 44-yard line on the first play of the second quarter.

Stephens took the direct snap and rushed 30 yards to the Governors’ 14-yard line.

Senior kicker Chris James capped the drive with a 27-yard field goal to give Western a 10-7 lead.

“It’s solely based on if they give you the look that you want,” coach David Elson said. “I have complete trust in Clay Stephens and knew that if that ball got snapped to him, he’d get a first down.”
