A thousand words beyond the Hill

The smell of popcorn and sweat filled the air as the energetic crowd screamed in anger or cheered support for the men beating on one another in the stage ring.

The Vette City Wrestling show on Sunday night at Lampkin Park in Bowling Green provided entertainment for about 60 people. The crowd ranged from infants to the elderly. Many members remained involved throughout the show, constantly yelling advice or critiquing the wrestlers’ moves.

“Sit down and shut up. I’ll knock you down with that camera,” shouted performer “Big E” during the show. The wrestlers don’t give out their real names at matches.

He acts as a mascot of sorts to entertain and engage the crowd during the match by cheating and verbally abusing the crowd, said his wife, Crystal Fields.

Most of the crowd were infuriated by Big E’s constant ridicule and insults. “Of course, he’s the opposite really,” Fields said. “He’s a baby in real life.”
