Television and movies tainted my expectations of working for a newspaper.
No one ever yells “Stop the presses!” Editors don’t chain-smoke in the office. And on most days, it’s fairly quiet in the newsroom.
Working at the Herald for three years killed those stereotypes. But we have more than 10,000 readers who will never work here and don’t know how a newspaper operates.
So this semester, we’ve created an editors’ blog on wkuherald.com called Press Pass.
Newspapers have become more transparent in their practices, and it’s time we do the same.
Editorial board members will update the blog with information about the Herald, our coverage and anything else that might unfold throughout the semester.
You might not know how we place stories, cover breaking news or find story ideas. Press Pass will be the place to learn more about us. Ask questions. Share ideas. Give feedback if we do something right or wrong.
Press Pass is just one change we are making this semester to improve the Herald. More multimedia pieces will be featured on our Web site. Some design elements will be different in the Herald print edition.
So go online to read the first entry. Maybe we’ll debunk a few of your newsroom stereotypes.
