Greeks box for charity

The scene was reminiscent of a fight in Madison Square Garden. An announcer and a bell signaled the start of each round.

But it was the Jaycees Pavilion in Lampkin Park that provided the setting for two nights of boxing.

Sigma Chi fraternity hosted their second annual Battle of the Greeks boxing match Thursday and Friday. About 1,500 people watched 30 fighters battle for charity.

There was a $5 cover charge.

There was one champion for each weight division.

Nashville freshman Ben Richardson, a Kappa Sigma member, won the featherweight division. Ross Pullins, a sophomore from Champaign, Ill., and a Sigma Phi Epsilon member, won the lightweight championship. Hopkinsville junior Glenn Stevanus, a Pi Kappa Alpha member, won the middleweight division. Elizabethtown junior Casey Goodman, a Farmhouse member, won the heavyweight championship.

The Sigma Chis raised about $4,500, said Tyler Seymour, Sigma Chi vice president and coordinator for the event.

The Sigma Chis are splitting the profits between the Huntsman Cancer Research Center and Children’s Miracle Network, Seymour said.

Seymour, a junior from Franklin, Tenn., said the Sigma Chi National Fraternity is matching every dollar donated to Huntsman.

The boxers suffered injuries ranging from cuts to broken noses, Seymour said.

But Stevanus found other aspects of the matches challenging.

“It was nerve-racking,” he said. “You don’t want to go out there and get beat in front of everybody.”

Goodman won when his opponent in the last match of the heavyweight division stepped down.

“I was upset. I was ready to go. I had been trying hard,” Goodman said.

Stevanus earned respect along with the middleweight title.

“A lot of people have come up and told me that it was a real good fight, and that it made their money going toward the fight all worth while,” he said.
