Baseball: Western extends streak at UK, 7-6

After earning their first series sweep in two years on Sunday, Western baseball was able to accomplish something else it had not done in two years.

The Toppers (6-4) picked up a 7-6 win at Kentucky on Tuesday, extending the team’s win streak to four games. They lost to the Wildcats twice in 2004.

The win marked the Toppers longest winning streak since taking five straight from May 12-21, 2004.

“We played offense really well,” coach Chris Finwood said. “We manufactured runs every time we got a chance to, and we took advantage of our at bats.”

It was another close game for the Toppers, and the teams were tied at five runs apiece going into the ninth inning. Senior centerfielder Corteze Armstrong scored on a balk by Kentucky junior pitcher Nick Dials to give the Toppers a one-run lead.

Junior infielder Casey Hamilton later singled to score junior catcher Jordan Newton.

Kentucky (9-3) pulled within one run off a single by junior infielder John Shelby in the bottom of the ninth, but Western was able to hold on for the win.

Western got a big boost at the plate from Newton, who went 2-for-2 with three RBIs, two runs scored and two walks.

“I think the guys executed in situations,” assistant coach Jonathan Hadra said. “We got our bunts down, we hit behind the runner when we had to. It was a good, offensive game.”

The Topper pitching staff went through four pitchers and gave up seven combined hits in its nine innings of work. Senior pitcher Garrett Stembridge (2-0) got the win.

With the win over the Wildcats, the Toppers are now two games over .500. It’s their best record since finishing the 2004 season 30-26. Finwood attributed the team’s good start to the players.

“It’s really a product of the guys working hard and doing what they’re asked to do,” he said. “It sounds great, and I’m happy to hear it, but we just talk about doing the right things on a daily basis.

Western heads to Morehead State tomorrow for a weekend series with the Eagles. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m. for both tomorrow and

Saturday’s games. Sunday’s game begins at noon.

“We just have to keep doing what we’ve done,” Armstrong said. “Like this past weekend and yesterday, just get everybody into the game and every do their part, play their role, and I think we can get another sweep.”
