A Western tennis player will miss at least two matches after he was arrested for possession of marijuana in Keen Hall.
Bowling Green freshman Andrew P. True, son of men’s tennis coach Jeff True, was released Jan. 30, a day after his arrest, from the Warren County Regional Jail on an a surety bond.
Campus Police Capt. Mike Wallace said no information other than what was on the arrest report could be given out.
Jeff True said Andrew True has already sat out one game, and he will be suspended for another. Jeff True has also removed Andrew from Keen.
“We’re trying to keep something like that from happening again,” Jeff True said.
Jeff True said Andrew True regretted the incident and did not want to comment.
Athletic Director Wood Selig said any disciplinary actions were an internal matter and he couldn’t discuss them.
Selig said the issue was being taken care of first as a student situation, not a student-athlete situation.
“It’s being handled as any one of those type of situations would be handled,” he said.
There are separate sanctions from the athletic department and the university in situations in which athletes get in trouble, Selig said. The punishment could be the same, or there could be two different actions.
Jim Schlinsog, an assistant director of residence life, said he couldn’t say for certain what actions would be taken against a student for marijuana possession in a dorm.
He said Western would look at student cooperation, the amount of marijuana the student possessed, where the student had it and whether it was their first violation.
Schlinsog said students could receive punishment ranging from a warning to expulsion from school.
Housing and Residence Life typically goes along with whatever punishment the university gives, he said.
According to the Western student handbook, “illegal use, possession or distribution of drugs, controlled substances or drug paraphernalia may be cause for dismissal from the residence hall, as well as other disciplinary and police action.”
Gail Ruble, the office coordinator for student life, said she couldn’t comment on what disciplinary actions Western would take with True.
