BASKETBALL UPDATE: Tops beat UNO, 72-57

Coming off its primetime 94-81 win over Louisiana-Lafayette on ESPN2

Thursday, Western dominated its way to a 72-57 victory over New Orleans Saturday in Diddle Arena.

The Toppers lost one of their star players however, in the process.

Sophomore guard Courtney Lee hit the floor hard after attempting to block a shot with 12:02 left in the second half, suffering a hip contusion. Lee also picked up a foul on the play.

“I’m sure he’s gonna be pretty sore and we’re just gonna have to take it one day at a time,” coach Darrin Horn said. “It’s a pretty hard fall but he’s a competitor and I’m sure if there’s any way he can play, he’ll play.”

Western pulled down 44 rebounds to the Privateers 20. The Toppers’ 19 offensive rebounds turned into 16 second chance points.

The Toppers also shot 50.9 percent from the floor, 71.4 percent in the second half.

“They’re a great rebounding team and we weren’t able to keep them off our defensive glass,” New Orleans coach Monte Towe said. “From our end we just lost our concentration in the second half.

Senior guard Anthony Winchester led Western with 14 points while junior guard Benson Callier picked up 13 points and nine rebounds.
