Decades story’s accuracy

While we value the intent of the article, please allow us to make a few minor corrections to your feature on Western?_TMs history (November 17, 2005).

Purists will want to know that Western?_TMs first day of classes was January 22, 1907, not January 17.

Classes did not ?_oemove” to the Administration Building (now Van Meter Hall) from Potter College. Western?_TMs big move was in 1911, when it moved from its downtown location to the Hill. In addition to the Administration Building (now Van Meter Hall), Western continued to use the Potter College building until it was demolished in 1936 to make way for Cherry Hall.

The Students?_TM Army Training Corps was formed in 1918 but the ROTC was not established until 1919, after the First World War had ended.

Western?_TMs name has actually changed four times: from Western Kentucky State Normal School in 1906 to Western Kentucky State Normal School and Teachers College in 1922; to Western Kentucky State Teachers College in 1930; to Western Kentucky State College in 1948 and finally, to Western Kentucky University in 1966.

The ?_oeold gymnasium which stood where Helm Library is today” actually became Helm Library, after substantial renovation in the mid-1960s.

Big Red was introduced at the last home game before Christmas 1979 due to fans?_TM reaction to Mr. Topper. College students considered Big Red more interesting that the well-intentioned, wool-tuxedoed Mr. Topper.

The Villanova game ended after two overtime periods, Western 89 – Villanova 92.

Western?_TMs logo, not its seal, was adopted in 1989. A seal has existed in various different forms since 1911.
