Swimming and diving: Butler provides learning experience

Western’s swimming and diving meet against Butler went as planned for coach Bruce Marchionda.

The Lady Toppers (2-0) won 147-106 and the Toppers (2-0) won 152-90 at the home meet Saturday.

Marchionda said he was able to put swimmers in events he needed to see.

“We learned a lot today,” he said.

Competing against the younger and smaller Butler team allowed swimmers to race in events they usually don’t swim in dual meets.

For senior Karl Swanson, that event was the 400-yard individual medley. He normally swims the 500 and 1,000 freestyle. Saturday, Swanson won the 400 in a time of 4:11.39.

“I wanted to swim it before our big meet at Georgia Tech,” he said.

The Georgia Tech Invitational will be Nov. 18-20.

At large meets, such as Georgia Tech and the Sun Belt Conference Championships, swimmers race in three individual events.

Marchionda said it is important that everyone scores points in all three events for the teams to have a shot at winning the conference championships.

“I was really pleased with where they were today,” he said.

Marchionda said the team needs to keep working hard and pay attention to details, both in training and meets.

Freshman Jessica Aspinall said she knows what she needs to work on in her race, the 100 backstroke, which she won in a time of 58.49.

“If I could fix my starts and turns I’d be a lot faster,” she said.

Aspinall said she wasn’t happy with her time, but it was to be expected after a hard week of practices.

The Toppers and Lady Toppers will travel to Cincinnati for bigger challenges, Xavier on Friday and the University of Cincinnati on Saturday.

“We’ll have to be on top of everything,” Marchionda said.
