Red towels, bike racks and organizational aid were on the agenda for last year’s Student Government Association senators.
Next week, this year’s SGA legislative branch will vote on other ways to spend the $115,000 budget from student fees.
The annual SGA budget was presented to senators at the Tuesday night meeting. It will come up for a vote next Tuesday.
SGA received $5,000 more in student fees than last year. The group has more than $15,000 to support new programs such as extended service for Provide-A-Ride and Western’s centennial celebration, said Melissa Paris, SGA administrative vice president. Paris compiled the budget during the summer.
The academic affairs department will likely pay for this semester’s faculty evaluations, SGA President Katie Dawson said.
Paris said she shifted funds to more needed areas to accommodate other expenses.
The budget outlined the amounts different SGA committees and operations costs would receive this year.
A proposed $24,000 may cover operations costs, including postage, supplies, scholarships, travel and the secretary’s salary.
Public relations expenses may be covered by a proposed $11,600. The money would pay for ad space, materials, T-shirts and funding for the public relations committee.
Nashville junior Seth Norman, public relations committee chairman, said his committee hasn’t met yet, so he doesn’t know if that amount will be enough for the public relations budget.
Norman said he plans to continue publicity efforts such as distributing red towels and promoting Provide-A-Ride.
“We’re going to continue doing what we have been doing, looking for opportunities all the time to try to get the word out,” he said.
SGA-facilitated campus improvements may be funded with $16,000 if the budget is passed. Main campus would receive $10,000 of that amount, and South Campus and Glasgow campus would each receive $3,000.
The proposed budget would allot $6,700 for SGA’s three annual retreats.
A proposed $5,000 would be used for miscellaneous expenses.
