Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity is inviting greeks and non-greeks to sum up their summer with a few rounds of volleyball for a good cause.
The Beach Dig Classic volleyball tournament on Sept. 7-8 at Preston Miller Park will combine food, fun and the quintessential summer sports.
Though fun and competitive volleyball will be a major part of the tournament, Louisville graduate student Rashad Colbert said he hopes unity will be the main focus.
All faculty and students, including Greeks and non-Greeks, are invited to participate in the tournament.
“I was looking for something to spread unity between fraternities, sororities, minorities and international students,” he said. “I wanted to spread unity so that everyone can have fun, step out of our own boxes and try something new.”
Colbert said he thought of the idea as a great addition to his fraternity’s Kappa Derby Week. The week includes a gala in which other college chapters will join Western’s group in Bowling Green to support the Kappas’ scholarship fund.
Erik Jenkins, assistant track and field coach and almuni Kappa member, said Kappa Derby Week started seven years ago to help a fellow fraternity brothers pay for college.
The Beach Dig Classic exceeds the original mission of Kappa Derby Week, he said.
“Not only do we bring people together for fun, we also really want to help any person who needs to continue their education,” Jenkins said. “When you have that kind of support, it puts everybody in for a good cause.”
Campus Activity Board and the Intramural Department is sponsoring the Beach Dig Classic along with the Kappas.
The money raised will go to cystic fibrosis research.
Colbert said there has been support for the event from Good Tymes 2, Fadz4Dayz barbershop, Intrigue Jewelers, Bluegrass Cellular, State Farm Insurance, Giorgio’s, Marble Slab and Water Works.
The deadline to register is Thursday. There will be a table set up in the lobby of Downing University Center to register for the tournament today and tomorrow.
Roster cards for the teams also are available at the Preston Center. For more information, visit www.wku.edu/epnutes.
Colbert said he hopes his vision for the Beach Dig Classic can be a great addition to Kappa Derby Week.
“Kappa Alpha Psi hopes that everyone will come out and spread the unity, even if they don’t play,” he said.
