‘Cancer doesn’t sleep,’ so campus relays for life

eams of students, teachers and other Bowling Green residents will be walking laps around Smith Stadium track from 7 p.m. tomorrow to 7 a.m. Saturday to raise money for the American Cancer Society.

“Cancer doesn’t sleep, so why should we?” said Louisville freshman Jessica Wiser, chairman of the event.

Wiser participates in relays because cancer has been a menace to her family for many years. She lost her father to brain cancer when she was 12 and her mother is currently fighting breast cancer for the second time.

“Relay For Life represents the hope that those lost to cancer will never be forgotten, that those who face cancer will be supported and that one day cancer will be eliminated,” she said.

But the mood at a Relay for Life is far from somber. It’s an event that those who relay say they devote to fun and happiness and a celebration of life.

There will be several live bands performing including Moon Tower, Kurtis Matthews Band and Third Season.

Hawesville senior Miranda Hunt is a cancer survivor who worked an internship at the American Cancer Society. She has spoken and sung at a couple of the relays in her hometown.

“It’s nice to know there are other survivors,” Hunt said. “It’s a time to reflect on those who weren’t so lucky.”

Those who haven’t registered with a team will be required to donate $5 to participate. If it rains the relay will be held from 7 p.m. to 12 a.m Tomorrow in Diddle Arena.
