A thousand words beyond the hill

dam Pape said it just about as well as anyone could. “You just can’t waste a beautiful day.”

The mere mention of the mall or a movie theater made the students standing around me cringe, Pape said.

But they could have just been shivering from the cold Barren River water. But the cold water couldn’t stop any of the Western students from taking a premature header or two off the rope swing.

Pape, a junior mechanical engineering major from Morgantown, scoffed at the thought of being indoors. For him and his friends the only way to spend a day after football was the 19th century method of making your own fun.

Senior engineering major Miguel Villegas was hanging out on the river for the first time. He summed his experience up in one word: “Awesome.”

But for Beaver Dam junior Brian Canty and Louisville freshman Alfredo Martin it wasn’t their first visit. “We came here back in December when the water was really cold,” Martin said. And the only reason he gave for that was “just to say we did it.”

So what’s the bottom line? Be spontaneous, quit complaining and go to the rope swing next time you think there’s nothing to do in Bowling Green. Who cares if the water’s cold?
