ome students might have thought he was just a guy from the audience entertaining them until the real comedian arrived.
Dressed like an ordinary college student, Lee Camp stepped up to a microphone in Downing University Center Theater last night without a single prop in sight.
He performed his stand-up routine in front of a sparse crowd, unfitting for a comedian who has opened for Saturday Night Live notables Jimmy Fallon and Tracy Morgan.
Making things worse, a group of hecklers did their best to rattle Camp with inappropriate laughter.
When they left, audience members clapped and Camp was noticeably relieved.
“I could tell right off the bat that they were gonna like me,” he said sarcastically.
He stuck to topics students could relate to such as course subjects and drinking.
“I thought astronomy was easy because I spent a lot of time in college lying on a sidewalk facing the stars,” Camp said.
He said you know you’re a slacker when you want to be able to find summaries of Cliff’s Notes.
“I majored in English and… uh… now I speak good,” he said.
Moving on to topics outside of college, Camp joked about bowling, saying it’s the only sport where drinking is encouraged. But he was corrected by an audience member, who said that golf is also a “drinking sport.”
“You never hear anyone say, ‘Let’s get trashed and shoot some archery,’” Camp responded.
Audience members were amused by Camp’s impersonation of somebody “calling shotgun” ridiculously early.
“Blind people never get shotgun, but you can put them in the back and tell them it’s shotgun,” he said.
Students were caught off guard by some of the jokes.
“I’m far too drunk to do crack. I’d burn myself,” Camp said.
Enda Grandfield, a senior from Ireland, took a break from studying to watch Camp.
“He was pretty funny, but I’d have to be in the right mood to really enjoy it,” Grandfield said.
Buffalo junior Stephanie Merrill was disappointed by the turnout.
“I think we could use some more publicity for the comedians, because obviously there weren’t many people here tonight,” Merrill said.
