Students to emulate United Nations

Thirty-six students will go to Chicago on Saturday to participate in a model U.N conference with a Political Science 300 class.

In Chicago, the students will represent four countries: Slovakia, Congo, Somalia and the Philippines in the mock U.N. meeting. According to Roger Murphy, the faculty adviser for the trip, the students have had to research their particular country.

“They have to act in that country’s interest,” he said.

Murphy said that the students have met several times throughout the semester to be prepared for the conference.

“The goal of the conference is to have an as authentic simulation of the U.N. as possible,” Murphy said. “We simply want to work as the U.N. would work.”

David Brunner, a senior from Scottsburg, Ind., said he wants to go because it is one of the largest conferences in the country. Brunner said that there will be schools from all over the world there. He also believes it will be good exposure.

“You can see everyone’s viewpoints on issues affecting everybody,” he said.
