Well, it was raining a bit…
As I walked up to Van Meter fighting haphazardly through the rain, I reaffirmed in my mind that Charles Moose was worth seeing. Though sadly many others felt differently and never made it to the intriguing lecture.
Yet, as I read the op-ed piece on Tuesday, I got the feeling that our Campus Activities Board was to blame for the relatively small crowd, which leaves me a bit confused. If a speaker’s bad then they’re bad, and if one’s irrelevant than they’re irrelevant. Charles Moose wasn’t either of those things. The Herald just chose to simply ignore one of the worst rainfalls we have had this semester, and instead blame CAB for low turnout. Please look at the bigger picture.
For example, apathy is a problem with college students; this I agree on. However, the newspaper should not pander itself to apathetic people. Instead the newspaper should champion the motivation that drives a person to brave the rain to gain a little more knowledge.
In addition, some events are frankly more pleasurable, but it does not mean that other events are not equally beneficial. For example, many find yellow journalism amusing and, with their hard earned money, buy grocery store tabloids. Thankfully though, other media organizations, such as the Herald, strive for the more honorable and enlightening civic journalism.
In closing, if a majority of the student editors had gone to listen to Moose, then I
believe they’d understand what drew the few, and why more will come when the sun shines.
