n a typical day, Lebanon Mayor Gary Crenshaw spends most of his time in the office.
“I have a boring life,” Crenshaw said. “All I do is shuffle papers.”
Crenshaw has been the mayor of Lebanon for almost six years. The job is officially a part-time position. Crenshaw is also the district director of the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
“Every day that I’m here (as mayor), I have to take a vacation at the other job,” Crenshaw said.
He said that he works nights and weekends to balance the two jobs. As a result of his double commitment, Crenshaw spends a lot of time outside his home.
“I don’t have much of a home life or family life, or I think I don’t.”
When Crenshaw finds time after a busy workday, he either spends it with his horses or goes running. Crenshaw said he tries to visit his horses three times a week.
He said that being surrounded by horses and trees offers him a sense of tranquility.
On Thursday’s visit, he whistles to call the horses back into the barn for feeding. Once the horses are in the stall, he strokes their bodies to calm them and observes them as they eat.
Once the horses are back roaming on the farm, he sits on the bumper of his Jeep to think through his day.
